I Wish I Had Mail

“Don’t you love New York in the fall?  It makes me want to buy school supplies.  I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address”.
Nora Ephron

Update 01/10/14**
Over the Christmas holidays, TCM showed the movie "The Shop Around The Corner" from 1940 so re-watched it and it was a charming delight.  On a recent Amazon order I received yesterday, I was trying to find things to bring my total to $35.00 (I can always find something to buy on Amazon) so I wouldn't have to pay shipping and ordered Blu-Ray versions of several of my favorite movies and one of them was "You've Got Mail"  and included was a disc for the "The Shop Around the Corner".  Now back to my original "Wish I Had Mail" post below:

Ironic...
I have a little magnetic calendar on my fridge that has witty sayings and when there is one that stands out to me, I tuck it behind one of my magnets so I can grab one & write my thoughts about it. Yesterday the one I picked to write about was this one from Nora Ephron (Thought I better hurry up and use it since Winter Solstice was just 3 days away and pencil bouquets seemed to be a Fall topic) from October 25. I kept it because "You've Got Mail" is my fave Meg Ryan & Tom Hanks movie.  So, I thought it was ironic when I looked People.com this morning and saw they had an article about the 15 year anniversary of this movie.  The People article is very interesting as it talks about how different the movie would be had it been written in present day instead of in the 90’s.   http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20767108,00.html

As I stated above, “You’ve Got Mail” is my favorite Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks movie.  The great Nora Ephron (1941-2012) wrote the script which is so witty but then again, I think Nora could make a grocery list a must read.  I have never watched “You’ve Got Mail” without happy crying at the end.  I feel that letter writing or actually any personal writing nowadays is a lost art and for someone who loves words and feels that letters can be a glimpse into the windows of a persons soul; I mourn.

For those of you who don’t know, “You’ve Got Mail” is a remake of a wonderful 1940 movie “The Shop Around The Corner” which stars Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan.  This movie was based upon the  1937 Hungarian play “Parfumerie”.   The premise for the original play and both movies is two people who can’t stand each other but who fall in love with each other through their correspondence in letters they are anonymously writing to each other.

These movies illustrate my belief that men and women’s relationships have been the same throughout the annals of history no matter what century or year.   Since the beginning of time and until the end of time, a man is still a man and a woman still a woman and love is still love.
