Edge of Tomorrow

My favorite movie of the year so far is still The Grand Budapest Hotel, but after seeing Transformers: Age of Extinction and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, hands down, for me, the best movie of the summer is Edge of Tomorrow.  And don’t give me any bullshit whining, “But I don’t like Tom Cruise.”  No matter how kooky he may seem personally, face it folks, whether we like it or not, the man is a movie star.  Emily Blunt is also proving that there is not anything she can’t do and no matter the genre of a film, she shines.
Transformers: Age of Extinction was the typical Michael Bay movie for me.  It was an hour too long, didn’t really make any sense but you came to care for the characters and the special effects were sensational.
I did really like Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and think Andy Serkis should be awarded for his outstanding character work in this movie as he can communicate more with a look than most actors can with pages of dialog.  For me, the original Planet of the Apes with Charlton Heston is still the best “Apes” movie because of the impact it made on me the first time I saw it; scared the crap out of me.  I like monkeys when they are Curious George or the game, Monkeys in a Barrel.  Otherwise, they are scary to me and I don’t discount the possibility that the “dumber” we make ourselves with all of our technology that animals are getting smarter than us.
When Tom Cruise first started his career, I thought he was good in Taps, The Outsiders, All The Right Moves, Risky Business and The Firm.  I thought he was okay in Top Gun and Cocktail but I thought he really hit his stride when he did Born on the Fourth of July, a role I thought he was robbed of an Academy Award for.   His performance in Magnolia made me weep and is his favorite part for me.   After Magnolia, I think I have liked everything he has done with my favorites being Collateral (excellent sound track), War of the Worlds, Tropic Thunder (especially since I didn’t know it was him the first time I saw it), and Valkyrie.  I was quite surprised when I rented Knight and Day with he and Cameron Diaz because it was a great fun movie and liked it so much, I bought it for my DVD collection.
I have been a fan of film all my life so it takes a lot to surprise me in a movie which doesn’t mean that I don’t enjoy a movie or TV series when I can see what’s coming but it is always nice to be surprised even though the storyline of endless cycles of the same day has been done before.  I wish I would have seen the Edge of Tomorrow in 3D but by the time I went to see it, it wasn’t playing in 3D but I did go see it twice.   A soundtrack is always an essential part of a movie for me and I thought this one was really good but a huge bonus for me was the ending credits song which I had only downloaded a couple of weeks before I saw the movie;  Love Me Again by John Newman.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZLTMC-BMCI
Edge of Tomorrow is directed by Doug Liman who directed the Bourne Trilogy movies, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Go and Swingers (You’re So Money!).   The movie is what I would call a science fiction action thriller that for me, immediately grabbed me and didn’t let go until the end.  And that is all I am going to say because I think you should rent this movie when it comes out on DVD and give it a chance and see if you don’t end up liking it even if you are not a Tom Cruise fan.
