He Was My Father

June 6, 2013

The date and time I watched the life of my Father end.
I was his firstborn child.
He was my Father until I was five.
When I was fifty one, I went to take care of my Father.
He was coming to the end of his journey.
I thought it would be a longer one.
When I was fifty four, I watched my Father die.

With the sun on my shoulder and the wind in my back
I will never grow older
At least not in my mind
I’m going where there ain’t no police
I’m going where there ain’t no disease
I’m going where there ain’t no need
To escape from what is only spirits at ease

Wonderful by My Morning Jacket
Lyrics by James Edward Olliges, Jr
