The BullRing

"It is not the same thing to talk of bulls as to be in the bullring".
Spanish Proverb

This saying was on a Zen daily calendar I have here in the office and I thought it was quite simple yet profound. I had given the calendar to my late Father last year because he was someone who was supremely curious about the world and was always interested in seeking out mind expanding experiences. I will admit that most of the things written on this calendar are so Zen that I can’t comprehend their meaning but this one was pretty straightforward to me.

In this day of armchair experts (the definition being a person who offers advice, criticisms and opinions on something in which they have no expertise or involvement) including armchair quarterbacks, politicians, doctors, lawyers, parents, etc., there seems to be a lot of anger by those outside of the bullring but no patience, tolerance or desire to understand what it is to actually be in the bullring with whatever issue is being pontificated on by all of the “armchair experts”.
